Hearing Screenings

Language and speech development depend on the ability to hear. Any undetected hearing losses can have a profound effect on a child’s ability to learn, socialize and have fun in preschool. Every spring we are fortunate to be able to offer a free hearing screening for all children at St Mark’s through the generosity of the John Tracy Clinic of Los Angeles. Children are assessed in groups of 2, 4 or 6 (depending on age) through fun games. Parental permission is required for the testing and permission slips will be available before the date of the screenings. For more information on the John Tracy Clinic or if you have any concerns about your child’s hearing, please visit their website - www.jtc.org

For the 2011-2012 school year, hearing screenings will be held on:

Tuesday, February 28 & Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Vision Screenings

Approximately one in twenty preschoolers has a vision impairment that interferes with learning (Prevent Blindness America, 2006) Early detection of impairments improves the success of medical treatments and a child’s readiness for school. Free vision screenings are offered to St Mark’s students through the California-Hawaii Elks Foundation every spring. Parental permission is required and permission will be sought nearer the time. For more information about the California-Hawaii Elks Preschool Vision Screening program, please visit their website. Click here to read an article by Theresa Schachtel, who has been visiting St Mark’s to do the vision screenings for many years.

For the 2011-2012 school year, hearing screenings will be held on:

Wednesday, March 14 & Thursday, March 15, 2012

Language & Speech Evaluations

We know that during these early years a young child’s development of receptive and expressive vocabulary is crucial. Sometimes families are aware of their child’s speech problems, or perhaps are unsure whether to be concerned about development of certain sounds (some children have developmentally appropriate misarticulations that will improve), or whether their child is using a satisfactory number of words appropriate for their age. Sometimes parents just do not know where to turn for help, and we want to be able to assist such families.

We offer families the opportunity to have their child’s speech and language evaluated for a nominal fee by Patricia Riner-Costantino, MA, Language and Speech Pathologist, who has been recommended to us from other local preschools. If you have any concerns about your child’s speech or language development this is an opportunity to have your child assessed by a professional speech pathologist with many years experience in the field. Evaluations are offered in the fall, but Pat can be referred to at any time during the school year at 818-281-4877.

For the 2011-2012 school year, Pat will be coming into St Mark’s for appointments the week of October 17, 2011. Parents are more than welcome to sit in on the evaluation and to talk with Pat about individual concerns. This screening costs $20. You will receive a written report a few days later.

Sickness

The school policy is that if your child is sick, they must be 24 hours free of fever, diarrhea or vomiting before returning to school after being ill. Parents are asked to be particularly vigilant during the fall & winter months when colds and the flu are more prevalent, by watching out for signs of symptoms in children, and encouraging frequent hand washing at home, which will be reinforced at school. Teachers wash toys and surfaces frequently.

There is an important relationship between children’s health and their ability to learn. Even a simple cold, toothache, or allergic reaction will disrupt a child’s energy level, cooperation, attention span, interest and enjoyment of learning. We ask that parents join the school in reinforcing and modeling healthy habits – eating nutritiously, exercising and sleeping well!
