The next big step after St Mark’s Preschool is kindergarten! Students leave St Mark’s and go to a wide variety of local schools, some private, and some public. It can be an overwhelming decision to make and navigate through the different options. Please know that the Pre-K teachers are available year-round to assist you with recommendations, to discuss kindergarten readiness in general, and to let you know how your child is doing. To help you start or continue your search, please look through attached list (pdf) of local kindergartens that we update and hand out each year. These are schools that previous St Mark’s students have attended. It is by no means exhaustive, and we would be pleased to hear from you about other schools you are interested in visiting so that we can add them to the list for future families.

There is much debate about kindergarten readiness and the question of whether a child is “ready” or not to start kindergarten is a complex and at times stressful decision to make. Here are some recent articles on this question:

Please feel free to discuss this further with your child’s lead teacher, at any time. Some private schools have particular stipulations concerning age and readiness requirements. Throughout the year, we receive information from local schools and will post information about open houses etc on the parent’s bulletin board outside the school office. In more recent years, a number of our students have entered the language immersion programs through the Glendale Unified School District. If you are interested in these programs, please contact the applicable school or the school district early in the school year, as there is usually high interest and an early registration date.
More information can be found on the GUSD website under Foreign Language Academies of Glendale (FLAG).
In the spring of each year, the Pre-K teachers will conduct basic evaluations of each child, which will be followed by the opportunity of a parent-teacher conference. Please remember though, that parent-teacher conferences can be arranged at any time. Please email the school office and we will arrange a convenient time for you to come in and speak with your child’s teacher.
Please remember that we are here to help and to make the transition as smooth as possible for your child and for you! We are licensed to have children until they are 6 years old if you feel that it is in the best interests of your child for him/her to have extra time here at St Mark’s.
