Our Parish Home: St. Mark's Episcopal Church
Here at St Mark’s Preschool we currently have 2 pre K classrooms, the Yellow Room is for the older pre K students, and the Blue Room is for the younger pre K students. Both rooms will follow a similar curriculum as attached. Students in both rooms will be prepared to leave St Mark’s to enter kindergarten. Some students will be in the Blue Room for a year, followed by the Yellow Room for a year, other students may spend 6 months in the Blue Room, and then either 6 months or a year in the Yellow Room. Placement depends on age and development.
Our curriculum will focus on literacy, reading, writing, math, design, music, art, nature, self-awareness and respect for others. Topics will be covered in a fun and hands-on approach, balanced by carpet time with teacher directed and child initiated discussions and activities.
The school-wide monthly cultural theme will be incorporated into all parts of the curriculum. Technology will be introduced through the use of computers to create picture pages or stories, basic computer skills, use of the mouse. Teachers will develop power point presentations for particular projects to enhance learning for students.
Pre-K classes go into our chapel twice a week for a program led by our Children’s Chaplain, Mr Richard Bruzzi. Throughout the year, students will learn different bible stories, re-created stories through dramatic play, learn songs with signing and movement, and learn to do small prayers of thanksgiving.
After January each year the older Pre-K class will start what we call “kindergarten time”. The goal of kindergarten time is to better prepare our children to sit, listen and do class work for longer periods of time as kindergarten demands more time sitting. Packets of worksheets will be provided. The packets will have some basic skills work to be practiced. This might include letter recognition, tracing, math, sorting, etc. Completing the packet correctly will not be the focus of kindergarten time. The main focus will be them listening to basic instructions and getting them excited about kindergarten.
