Two Year Olds' Curriculum 2011-2012: pdf

The Red Room is our two year old room. Our loving two-year old teachers gently guide your child as they adjust to being in a school environment. Much of the time in this room will focus on developing independence (toilet training, eating, and dressing) and learning to adapt to school routines and experiences. Teachers will help parents with potty learning when a child is showing signs of being ready to start the process.
Carpet time in the Red Room will cover the following (though not all everyday):

Weekly themes will include discussion in depth of favorite children’s books (which will include art and other activities), for example, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” by Eric Carle, “The Grumpy Morning” by Pamela Duncan Edwards, and “There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly”, nursery rhymes, particular animals or groups of animals – farm animals, sea animals, weather, transportation, etc as well as covering topics related to the school-wide cultural theme of the month.

The artwork that children work on in the Red Room (and throughout their time at St Mark’s) will always focus on the process and not the product. Please do not expect their art folder to be full of work, especially in the first few weeks of school as children get acclimated to the class and environment. Art activities will focus on sensory application of paint, glue, stickers, use of the crayons, markers and paint dabbers, to strengthen small motor skills and to foster an enjoyment of being creative with colors and different art supplies.

Fine motor skill development is encouraged through table activities such as play dough, legos, trains, stacking blocks, and puzzles. Large motor skill development takes place outside on the yards, in the sandbox and on the back yard with the climbing equipment, bikes, etc. Also, children will be encouraged to participate in music and movement on a daily basis inside the classroom.
